Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Institute for Experimental Physics

At Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, the following positions are available at the Institute for Experimental Physics ( www.exphy.uni-duesseldorf.de) at the earliest possible date:

1) Scientist (m/f/d) in the field of experimental quantum optics - Satellite experiments with optical atomic clocks

2) Lecturer or Ph.D. student (m/f/d) on didactics of
experimental quantum technology

Positions are temporary for 3 years, with the option of extension to 6 years.

1) The position (post-doc or PhD student) is available within the DFG research group FOR 5456, whose overarching goal is the first implementation of satellite-based relativistic geodesy using optical atomic clocks and laser links between Earth and the international space station ISS.

Your tasks:
The concrete task is to operate our strontium lattice clock at the Geodetic Fundamental Station Wettzell. In cooperation with the partners of the DFG research group, our clock will be compared with a strontium lattice clock at PTB Braunschweig. For this purpose, a laser link Wettzell - ISS - Potsdam and a fibre link Potsdam - Braunschweig will be implemented. The comparison will be carried out during the ESA mission ACES, which will begin in 2025. This mission will operate an atomic clock and optical and microwave transponders on the ISS.
The work of the person filling the position includes: Extension and metrological characterization of our already built optical lattice clock “SOC2”, currently at PTB Braunschweig, preparing and implementing transport to Wettzell, installation, optimisation, operation, enhancement, measurement campaigns during the ACES mission, data analysis. The scientist will also contribute to enhance the performance of and integrate into SOC2 new clock lasers currently under development. They will be based on room temperature and on cryogenic reference cavities.  Work locations will be Braunschweig (2024) and Wettzell.

Your profile:
  • Completed university studies (diploma/master's degree)
  • For the post-doctoral position: doctorate with a grade "very good" or better
  • Highly motivated to carry out precision experiments and implement novel measurement methods
  • Strong initiative, effective working style
  • High level of creativity and drive to experiment intensely
  • Willingness to work in a team and in a research network
  • Computer programming experience
  • Knowledge in electronics
  • Experience in the field of optics and quantum optics is desirable
We offer:
  • A truly worldwide unique research topic
  • For the post-doc position: salary level 100 % E13
  • For the doctoral position: salary level up to 75% E13, depending on experience
  • For the post-doc position: possibility to qualify for a habilitation in the subject "experimental physics"; you will receive extensive support for this.
  • Embedding in a DFG-funded consortium
  • International networking
  • Support from electronics engineers
  • Participation in conferences
2) This position is part of the North Rhine-Westphalian initiative EIN Quantum NRW. The task is to develop and offer experimental courses on QT for high-school students, physics B.Sc. and M.Sc. students. The courses shall complement the department’s experimental and theoretical teaching and research activities on QT. Topics are: (1) Trapping, storage, laser cooling and investigation of atoms and other particles; (2) Quantum properties of light, correlated photons; (3) Effects of superconductivity and their applications. Further topics are possible and can be developed by the post holder. Simplified offers are to be provided within the framework of the HHU student laboratory (https://www.physik.hhu.de/angebote-fuer-schulen). The post holder will develop the courses, carry them out on a trial basis with students and pupils, optimize and evaluate them.

Your profile:
  • Strong motivation in the transfer of knowledge to young people (pupils and students)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Very good command of the basics of quantum physics, and of German language
  • Possess or be able to quickly develop experimental skills.
We offer:
  • Support and supervision by experienced scientists who know the abovementioned topics very well and have the appropriate equipment available or are involved in setting it up.
  • Salary: 75% EG14 (with Ph.D. degree) or EG13 (Ph.D. student), and 100% from year 4 on.
  • Possibility to do a doctorate in the field of physics didactics.
